Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

What is NLP?
You could think of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as an owner's manual for the human brain. It's the study of how we think, feel and act, marked by an intense curiosity about how (rather than why) human beings get the results they do.

My interest in NLP began some 20 years ago as a driving instructor for a large bus company, this company had a number of sites and employed some 1300 people. Recruiting drivers was a big job and resulted in large groups on induction days.

Many people when faced with being tested became negative about their own abilities, people would often ask " What happens if I fail the test?" nobody seemed to ask "What happens if i pass the test?"!! I understood the fears and embarked on constructing a strategy for them to use.

It was obviously a fear of failure that caused this reaction, and it all hinged on their inner state of mind, basically what they were allowing themselves to think and the association they had with certain words, for example 'test'

So the strategy was to change the words we used. Many knees went weak when we talked about the driving test! so we replaced the word 'test' with the word 'goal', our 'goal' was to reach the standard required. We replaced 'fail' with 'feedback', now whatever we did was going to result in receiving some 'feedback' that would either say we had reached our goal, or what more we would need to do to achieve it.

It helped because people did not have the negative feelings associated with the word 'test' and 'failure'. Being much more relaxed enabled people to become much more confident in making mistakes and learning from them thus making the learning more effective.

The principles of NLP are about looking at what we do, changing what doesn't work and looking at new ways of thinking and the way we see the world around us.

One of the things that often surprises people about NLP is the speed with which many problems can be resolved. Solving one's problems is all about learning - at the unconscious level, which is where it counts - and learning can happen very quickly.

Some principles of NLP
We remember the things we should forget and forget the things we should remember.

If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got, if what you are doing isn't working then change it.

People have their own model of the world, and what they do makes sense within that model.

Our Courses
We incorporate some of the principles of NLP into our courses as it is our belief that people learn better when they are comfortable, involved and able to participate.
Assumptions and Perceptions can be barriers to developing an open mind, challenging issues and exploring what could be.

Some comments from people attending our courses;

"Was not sure of the courses at first, became more interesting as the day went on"
"Very informative and enlightening"
"Good use of time an opportunity not to be missed"
"At the end of the day I realise that the good things are better than the bad. After touring the workshops I now know where the costs goes and will try to avoid them"
